When you consider just how far in home teeth whitening products that we take for granted now, have advanced from their rather modest beginnings, it can make you really grateful for what you do not have to put into your mouth simply to get a bright white smile. Even though it may look that way, we have not always had products such as brushed on bleaching gels, whitening toothpastes or whitening strips available. Before the oral healthcare marketplace grew into the major industry that it is now, getting that elusive smile was not always such a simple task.
These days, most of us know that brushing our teeth twice a day or after meals is the first step in home teeth whitening. To do that, we turn to our trusty toothbrush to remove any surface buildup on our teeth. Everyone has a toothbrush readily available but what would you do if you could not find yours. You would go outside into your front or back yard of course and find yourself a suitable twig. Hundreds of years ago, people would really chew on twigs in order to clean their pearly whites. After that, some smart person, way back in history, had the bright idea of fashioning a piece of wood and adding wild boar bristle to the end of it. And so the toothbrush was born although the thought of having a mouthful of hog whiskers first thing in the morning is not too appealing.
Wanting to have whiter teeth is not anything new and has always been fashionable. The early barber, who used to double as the local dental practitioner, would literally file the surface of the tooth down and then apply a solution of Nitric Acid. This procedure would sure enough be effective at giving dazzling white teeth, but it also came with a high price tag. The combination of filing and acid would ruin the enamel protection resulting in swift decay and the eventual loss of the teeth.
Consider that fresh minty taste of your toothpaste. The majority of whitening toothpastes nowadays contain sodium bicarbonate as an active component. It is still a popular practice to brush the teeth with bicarbonate of soda right out of the Arm & Hammer packet. If you do not want that baking soda taste, then you may want to stick with toothpaste. At any rate it no longer includes urine, which was a common ingredient in the 1800′s.
If it is said once, it will be said a hundred times over your life. Home teeth whitening all starts with following a proper oral hygiene routine. Keeping away from tobacco products, red wine and beverages like coffee and tea are also great ideas if your goal is to have pearly whites. Do not take for granted how easy it is for modern man to have brighter teeth. At least you do not have to brush with a toothbrush made of pig hair.
