Can Botox Treatments Help With Crows Feet

September 11th, 2009 · No Comments · Health News

Crow’s feet, AKA lateral canthus lines, are what are called dynamic wrinkles.  This means that the fine lines are caused by muscle contractions, particularly squinting.  There are a number of steps you can take to treat and stop crow’s feet, including Botox.  Botox is a toxin that when used in little doses temporarily paralyzes the muscle.  When injected into the muscles around the eyes, the patient is forestalled from squinting and therefore from developing crow’s feet.

Find a certified medical consultant to do your Botox injections.  Because Botox is a prescription drug and getting injections is a medical process, you should not allow anyone but an approved medical practitioner to perform your procedure.  Look for a cosmetic surgeon or a cosmetic skin specialist to do the job.

Have a consultation with your doctor first to determine whether you are an appropriatee candidate for Botox injections in your crow’s feet.  This is a chance for your doctor to judge your health and for you to ask any questions you need answered.

Ask about other procedures to treat crow’s feet.  Botox injections do not always treat deep wrinkles, so you might need further procedures such as a glycolic peel, fillers or brow lift to smooth out pre existing crow’s feet.

Botox blocks the release of neurotransmitters from explicit nerve endings.  When it is injected into the skin, it is taken up by the nerves, and over time blocks the release of neurotransmitters, shutting off those nerves.

In dermatology, we use botox to shut off the nerves that control muscles in your face, like your forehead and brow.  With those nerves off, you can’t contract the muscles, so they stay flat.It is the same as having wrinkles in your jeans.  While you are upright, the pants hang loosely and are smooth.  When you sit, your thighs and hips crinkle the material, forming creases or wrinkles.  In the same way, when your facial muscles contract, they bunch up, creasing the skin and forming wrinkles.

Have the process done on a slow day.  The procedure is fast and comparatively painless, but you could have some minor bruising and tenderness round the injection sites.  You can return to work immediately, but you could not want to take conferences with clear needle marks around your eyes.
